Ammarnäs trip report

23 June 2000.
Sunny weather, 18° C, occasional showers.
Drove north from Uppsala along the coast to Umeå, and then inland to Vindeln : 660 km.
Camping site at the Vindel river (Vindelälven). Short walk along the river, crossing the rapids over a hanging bridge. Thunderstorm. Moscitoes. Saw Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) along the river. Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) is everywhere.

Sunny weather, no rain.
Drove westwards along the Vindel river from Vindeln - Åmsele - Sorsele to Ammarnäs : 300 km.
Made numerous short stops along the road. Observations:
  • a pair of Cranes (Grus grus) with one juvenil on a marsh along the road
  • breeding Common Sandpipers on every marsh
  • Sand Martins (Riparia riparia) everywhere along the river
  • Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)
  • Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla)
  • from an observation tower at a lake near Åmsele: 3 Cuckoos, Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus), Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula)
  • a nature reserv near Vormsele (Kittelforsheden): the first reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) on the road, Willow Tit (Parus montanus)
  • near Vindelgransele: a female Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) with 2 chicks crossed the road
  • observation tower at Gautsträsk, 1 km. SW of Ammarnäs: Long-tailed Skua (Stercorarius longicaudus), Black-throated Diver (Gavia arctica), Wigeon (Anas penelope), Teal (Anas crecca), Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula), Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), Goosander (Mergus merganser), Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), Ruff (Philomachus pugnax), Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), Curlew (Numenius arquata), Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) and Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea).
Found a primitive camping site in Ammarnäs. A cold evening with very few moscitoes and lots of Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), White Wagtail (Motacilla alba), Robin (Erithacus rubecula), Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris), Song Trush (Turdus philomelos), Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) and Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs).

25 June 2000.
Sunny weather in the morning, cloudy around noon, bright again in the afternoon.
Drove north on a small road, following the river Vindel. Parked my car on a parking place ca. 10 km. north of Ammarnäs. Followed a trail along Höbäcken to "Renslakteriet" and continued on the main mountain trail ("Kungsleden") till lake Lisvojaure, went back the same way. Beautiful scenery. A walk of about 18 km, from 400 m to 900 m above sea level, with patches of snow from 800 m.
Observations:
Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), Redwing (Turdus iliacus), singing Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla) and Redpoll (Carduelis flammea) in the birchwood on the lower mountain slopes.
Above the tree limit Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis), Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) and Lapland Bunting (Calcarius lapponicus). Numerous Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and Raven (Corvus corax) in the sky. At lake Dautajaure: Velvet Scoter (Melanitta fusca), Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), Redshank (Tringa totanus), Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) and Long-tailed Skua (Stercorarius longicaudus). Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) in lake Lisvojaure and a herd of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) on the mountain slope.

Örnbo
26 June 2000
Cold, cloudy and continuous rain. The low clouds make a trip to the mountain regions impossible. In stead a forest walk along the north side of Gautsträsk to Örnbo, Bissajaure and back to N Ammarnäs, circa 14 km.
Observations:
Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) at the rapids north of Ammarnäs ("Vindelåforsen") and a breeding pair at Bissanbäcken.
Along the forest trail: Dunnock (Prunella modularis), Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata), Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), Willow Tit (Parus montanus), Siberian Tit (Parus cinctus) and Siberian Jay (Perisoreus infaustus).

Continuous rain throughout the night. Impossible to go up on the mountain. I decide to drive home. Elk (Alces alces) on the road near Åsele.
